The White Suffolk breed was chosen for its versatility, which had already been proven by its black-faced ancestors. The white faced version has the ability to produce prime suckers for the domestic market or if the season is tough lambs can be shorn and grown out to impressive weights on summer stubbles and in feedlots.

Recently the breed has excelled in carcase competitions and one of the most exciting developments is the performance of the White Suffolk as a maternal sire, meaning 1st cross ewe lambs can be kept as replacements, mated in feb/march the following year and achieve good lambing % in the spring providing a quick turnover for the grower.
Due to an open minded breed association the flock book has remained open and the White Suffolk has benefited from high performance genetics from many different breeds being bought together in one complete package. In recent years the breed has consolidated and there is a huge number of quality sires from within the breed available for seed stock producers to work with.
We have been a member of Lambplan for many years and over this period have made considerable genetic gain. All our lambs are scanned at 6 mths of age. Actual Weight (Pwwt) , Fat (Pfat) and Eye muscle depth (Pemd) are measured and entered into Pedigree Wizard at this time, which is then formulated into performance ASBV's by Sheep Genetics. Birth weight (Bwt) and Weaning weight (Wwt) ASBV's are also calculated from previous data.
Many different performance indexes are available to commercial producers including Carcase plus, Trade $, Export $ and the new 2020 index which we think will suit the modern prime lamb producer. The 2020 index still focuses on growth (including both Pwwt 25% and Wwt 24%), fat and eye muscle but also puts emphases on Birth Wt and FEC (worm count)
This index will be used at "Bayview Downs" for sire selection in future years as we believe it combines all the performance ingredients for a successful operation.
